The paisley pattern by CYMSTAR, carries a history that stretches back centuries, long before it became a symbol of modern street culture. Originating from the ancient Persian boteh motif, a distinctive curved, teardrop-shaped design often associated with life, growth, eternity, and nature. The pattern traveled through Persia and India before becoming internationally known as “paisley” after the Scottish town of Paisley became a major center for its textile production in the 19th century. Generations later, the pattern found an entirely different cultural identity on the streets of Los Angeles. Red and blue paisley bandanas became strongly associated with the Bloods and Crips respectively, transforming an ancient textile motif into one of the most recognizable visual elements of West Coast street culture. Through hip-hop, music, art, and fashion, that imagery eventually reached far beyond Los Angeles, influencing streetwear around the world.
