Robert Cymbalski – Founder, Creative Director and CEO, CYMSTAR Designs
Emerging from Toronto’s cultural mosaic, Robert Cymbalski embodies a new vanguard of designers redefining the language of modern luxury. In a city where global influences converge and nightlife pulses through the streets, where music, fashion, and movement blur into one continuous rhythm, he forged a signature aesthetic rooted in after-dark energy and an unyielding instinct to stand apart.
Long before the inception of CYMSTAR, fashion was not a pursuit, but a reflex. Cymbalski did not follow trends; he dismantled and rebuilt them, reshaping everything he wore, from running shoes to denim to the simplest T-shirt. Each piece became a deliberate expression of identity, altered with precision, refined with intent, and elevated beyond its original form. What began as personal instinct would become the foundation of a design philosophy defined by individuality and control.
That instinct first took shape through sport. A lifelong competitive hockey goaltender, Cymbalski advanced to the junior level in his later high school years, where performance and presence were inseparable. It was here, within the discipline of the crease, that his introduction to design emerged in its rawest form. He began customizing his own goaltending equipment, sewing leather by hand and by machine, reconstructing each piece to reflect both function and personal expression. What started as a necessity evolved into a demand, as others sought his craftsmanship. This early momentum led to a collaboration with renowned goaltending manufacturer Brian Heaton, where Cymbalski contributed to the development and customization of a line of equipment called ALTRA, which he would ultimately wear himself. It was a defining chapter, one that sharpened both his technical precision and his belief that true originality is engineered, not inherited. When he eventually stepped away from competitive hockey and turned his focus to other competitive sports like skiing, the mindset he had cultivated never left him.
His creative evolution continued in graphic design, where he developed a refined eye for visual identity and narrative. Across industries, he learned to translate abstract ideas into striking, memorable forms, balancing artistic instinct with strategic clarity.
From there, his vision expanded into the digital realm through web design, where he crafted immersive brand environments. Each project extended beyond the boundaries of a website, becoming a fully realized experience, cohesive in vision, deliberate in execution, and emotionally resonant.
In 2020, Cymbalski introduced CYMSTAR, a label born from personal conviction and scaled through global ambition. What began as an independent concept rapidly evolved into an international brand, supported by manufacturing partnerships worldwide. Its trajectory reflects a designer equally fluent in creation and construction, one who understands that building a fashion house requires both vision and infrastructure.
CYMSTAR exists where streetwear meets refinement. Its collections, spanning denim, hoodies, elevated essentials, and lifestyle pieces, echo the intensity of Toronto’s nightlife and the discipline of intentional design, bold yet controlled, expressive yet exact. Each piece is governed by a singular principle: distinction. Nothing is incidental; every detail is deliberate, every design an assertion of identity.
“Image is everything.”
